Clive Cussler
in order.
The grandmaster of adventure who raised the Titanic, created Dirk Pitt, and built five bestselling series.
Clive Cussler wrote his first novel at night while working as an award-winning advertising creative director, inventing marine engineer and adventurer Dirk Pitt as a deliberately larger-than-life answer to the brooding spies of 1970s thrillers. When Raise the Titanic! became a blockbuster in 1976, Cussler quit advertising for good and went on to publish more than 80 books, landing on the New York Times bestseller list over 100 times.
Cussler didn't just write about shipwrecks — he found them. With royalties from his novels he founded the real National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA), a nonprofit that has discovered more than 60 historically significant wreck sites, including the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley. His heroes' love of vintage automobiles was autobiographical too: Cussler amassed a museum-worthy collection of over 100 classic cars in Colorado, and famously wrote himself into his own novels as a recurring cameo character.
In his later years Cussler turned his empire into a family business and a thriller factory, launching the NUMA Files, Oregon Files, Isaac Bell, and Fargo series with hand-picked co-authors, including his son Dirk Cussler. Since his death in 2020, those co-authors have continued the series under his name, and 'a Clive Cussler novel' remains shorthand for lost treasure, impossible escapes, and history-soaked adventure on the high seas.
Where to start
New readers should start with the Dirk Pitt series, and the classic entry points are Raise the Titanic! (1976) or the mid-series peak Sahara (1992) — both work fine cold, since Cussler recaps what matters. If you want strict continuity, read Dirk Pitt in publication order beginning with The Mediterranean Caper, saving Pacific Vortex! (written first, published sixth) for whenever you're curious about Pitt's earliest case. The spin-off series are all independent: try Serpent for ocean science (NUMA Files), Golden Buddha for a mercenary crew with a disguised super-ship (Oregon Files), The Chase for early-1900s detective adventure (Isaac Bell), and Spartan Gold for husband-and-wife treasure hunting (Fargo).

Frequently asked questions
What order should I read the Dirk Pitt books?
Publication order is the standard way: start with The Mediterranean Caper (1973) and continue through the series. The one quirk is Pacific Vortex! — Cussler wrote it first but only published it in 1983 as book six, and chronologically it's Pitt's earliest adventure, so some fans read it first. Either approach works, since every book stands on its own.
How many Dirk Pitt books are there?
There are 27 Dirk Pitt novels to date, from The Mediterranean Caper (1973) through Clive Cussler The Corsican Shadow (2023). Cussler wrote the first 17 solo, co-wrote the next several with his son Dirk Cussler, and Dirk Cussler has continued the series since his father's death in 2020.
Do the Clive Cussler series connect to each other?
Each series stands alone, but they share one universe: NUMA and characters like Admiral Sandecker, Dirk Pitt, and Kurt Austin cross paths occasionally, and The Titanic Secret directly bridges the Isaac Bell and Dirk Pitt series. You can read any series independently without missing anything essential.
Are new Clive Cussler books still being published?
Yes. Cussler built each series with a co-author — Dirk Cussler (Dirk Pitt), Graham Brown (NUMA Files), Mike Maden (Oregon Files), and Jack Du Brul (Isaac Bell) — and they have continued releasing new entries under the 'Clive Cussler' brand since his death in February 2020.
