Jules Verne Books and Movies

Jules Verne was an extremely popular French author. His first book, "Martin Paz" in 1852, was published when he was 24. Up to date there are seventy-four books published with the latest being "The Marriage of a Marquis" (1991).

Several of Verne's works were discovered and published for the first time long after his death, so don't be surprised by some of the publication dates. In fact, eleven books were published posthumously. Jules Verne was creating at the average 1.4 works a year and the most republished of his novels is the "Around the World in Eighty Days", which is available in four hundred and sixty-six different ISBNs just in English.

Twenty-six of his books have been turned into two hundred and twenty movies in total. "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" is the most adapted novel, counting seventy-one movies and TV-series episodes.

Other interesting stuff
Despite of enormous success of Jules Verne's romantic adventure stories, the author was not recognized as an important literary man in France during his lifetime.

For a long time Jules Verne was perceived as a writer of adventure novels for children by the English language critics. Not long ago accurate English-language translations have begun to appear in the Anglo-American book marketplace. Since 1982 Verne's literary reputation has taken a turn for the better in Great Britain and America as several university scholars completed their Ph.D.s on "Voyages extraordinaires".

Some stats: Twenty-six of Jules Verne books (35% out of total 74) have been adapted to 80 movies, 32 TV movies, 4 videos, 97 episodes from 11 TV series, 1 video game
